Issue 14 of The WHG Out Now |
|
|
|
|
Nearly forg ot to mention that Issue 14 of The WHG is now in the wild. Some interesting and thought provoking stuff inside the magazine this time, including Donald McKinney's Political Spirits column, an interesting article on low-cost, low-impact housing, and an interview with Philip Carr-Gomm author of A Brief History of Nakedness (rrp £19.95 www.reaktionbooks.co.uk). In addition, there's some seasonal cooking ideas, courtesy of the Nick Nairn Cook School, as well as the Donalds' Book Reviews, and Barbara Meiklejohn-Free's advice on space clearing. Oh yeah, and some junior WHGers give us their thoughts on a few of the latest children's books. Exciting.
And the image over there to the left? That's a Keli Clark image, as will be released pretty soon as part of her latest range. Nice. |

Ah, competitions are back online!
Just click the link in the left-hand menu and away you go (you have to be registered, but that's free). Go on, good luck.
Oh, and we've started adding some pictures back into the gallery. Just a few pics from the last couple of years. Nothing in particular... |

The Adventures of Intrepid Jane |

Yesterday I wrote a post about my upcoming (and very last-minute – I only decided to do it YESTERDAY!!) 10-day 200+ mile run across Islay and Jura which I am starting on Monday 26th July. This is a very late addition to my Help For Heroes fund raising “portfolio” (you can track my progress here ) but I think it’s showing all the signs of becoming one of the most significant elements of my quest. I’m not sure what its significance is yet: but I am sure I will learn its meaning whilst I am actually running on Islay and Jura.
I didn’t know which picture to use for the post but as I was scrolling through my album, one made me smile – so I posted it (and I’ve used it again today because there seems to be some magic in it ;-) It was taken last summer in Donegal after rock-climbing at Malin Beg and swimming in the Atlantic. I was blissfully happy. I had just met the man with whom I was about to fall in love.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind |

I am not a cyclist – I am a runner who likes to run a long way.My partner is not a cyclist either – he is a climber who likes to climb (a long way) and who humours me by floating along effortlessly beside me on my long runs while I am looking nothing like Paula Radcliffe at all. We are both training for an ultra-marathon in Northern Ireland in the middle of June – it’s 52 miles on our feet with a bit of a climb. That’s a long way. We got tired!

We thought that as we were tired we should take a holiday. And so I began fantasising about lying down for very long periods of time. And so my prtner (it’s definitely a man thing) began fantasising about some kind of action adventure (no matter how sensitive they appear when you meet them, there seems to be a hidden Bruce Willis in all of them). Hmmm..Lying down and action adventure :unlikely marriage, you may be thinking? Well, you’d be wrong! Our ideal holiday beckoned in the form of a pair of recumbent tricycles : a means of transport that would allow us to lie down for hours at a time while undertaking all sorts of action adventures.

Why do we give people labels? |
|
|
|
|
We all make decisions about people – sometimes instantly – but do we ever stop to think about the implications? Personally, I’m not convinced we do. When people are introduced they are usually given an association:
‘Let me introduce you to Martyn, he is a Marketing Specialist’
But think about the implications if it was said:
‘Let me introduce you to Martyn – last month he won £50k on the lottery’
Which person would you be more interested in meeting? My point is that I think it is healthy to stop in your tracks every so often. First of all, look at yourself in the mirror. Ask yourself ‘How do people see me?’ Warts and all? With what and with whom are you associated? If you like the answer – brilliant – well done. If not, do something about it, because you have to live in your own skin.
We can never stop people being malicious, nasty, cruel or just downright jealous, but we can at least give people in life a chance. We all make mistakes and wish we could turn the clock back, but we can’t. Be aware of who you are and of your values – but do not judge anyone else, as they are living their lives the best way they can. Life has many twists and turns and it is a journey that we all need to go through, so let’s make it as enjoyable as possible. Look at your friends, work colleagues and family – decide who you want in your life and what qualities they bring. Then make sure that the people you have in your life know that they are valued. So if you had to decide on a label for yourself, which would you be? Versace, Armani, Prada or would you just like to be a Levi’s person? As for me – if I were to choose a label, I would like to be ‘Actress’!
