At Woodland Herbs, we are passionate about herbs and herbal medicine, and the benefits that a more holistic approach to healthcare can offer. We believe that simple advice on herbal and home remedies is more important than making that next sale. And for us this is one of pleasures of running our own business. Just recently we were approached by an elderly woman suffering from arthritis, who had read about an all new, all natural tablet which would ease her pain, and only cost her £19.99 a month. Having a scientific background, we were able to read and review the findings of the supporting research. In addition, we looked deeper into the story only to discover that the effects of this tablet were originally recorded by the use of rose hip jam. We also found that the main investigator of this all-new remedy had for many years been recommending rosehip jam! Right up until he was approached to market his jam by converting it into one easy-to-swallow tablet, that is. I don’t think it is just us who consider this to be unnecessarily commercial. As herbs and foods cannot be patented, the easiest and most common way for a company to make money from herbal remedies is to develop a patented extract or process, and use a PR company to promote the product as a ‘new breakthrough’. As a result, the advertised capsules have what is described as ‘a unique patented drying process’ and a price tag to match. Although we may not seem too supportive of the new rosehip capsules, the research did make one breakthrough by identifying one of the mechanisms by which rosehip works in the treatment of arthritis. However, even with corporate funding, it does not appear to have improved on nature! With that in mind, next time you’re feeling ill or rundown, why not try something natural.
